Guidelines on Evaluating the Energy Consumption and Reducing the CO2 Emissions of Video Streaming presented
Video streaming has become an integral part of our daily media consumption and, at 60 to 70 percent, accounts for the largest share of global internet traffic. The white paper serves as a guide for decision-makers, developers and consumers to recognize the complex and diverse relationships between streaming components and environmental impacts and to promote sustainable solutions.
With the growing popularity of streaming services and the extensive use of video content on social media platforms, it is more important than ever to be able to understand and evaluate the impact of this technology on our environment. This white paper examines the streaming value chain and its environmental footprint, from the content production stage to customers’ end devices. To this end, it considers the energy consumption involved in video streaming and the resulting greenhouse gas emissions along the value chain.
The Green Streaming project, funded by the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Protection (BMWK), aims to review and analyze the current study situation, which is often based on simulations, with measurements along the streaming chain. On this basis, savings and optimization potentials are identified and technical solutions for reducing energy requirements are developed and tested. The results of this analysis form the basis of the white paper.
